96. What does God require in the second commandment?Ī. That we in no wise represent God by images,a nor worship him in any other way than he has commanded in his word.b In the Heidelberg Catechism we read.Ī. Idolatry is, instead of, or besides that one true God, who has manifested himself in his word, to contrive, or have any other object, in which men place their trust.a Images made to represent Christ being considered idolatry is not a new thing or my personal rant, but has been a part of the Reformed Church’s beliefs for hundreds of years.

I think people have become so accustomed to seeing these posts on social media that they have become numb to them and never think twice about them, this is dangerous and needs to be repented of. Images on social media made to represent Christ Jesus is idolatry plain and simple you are asked to “Pray” or “Like” in reverence all the while to an idol. It’s simple Jesus did not break any of the laws he did not sin I do not assume that he would break his own commandment nor do I believe his disciples would have been ignorant of this fact. I can’t find anywhere in the New Testament where Jesus specifically asked to be painted or sculpted or was said to be, in fact he would not want to be.

Images that are supposed to represent Jesus when we have no idea what he looked like are not Christ, this in the bible is referred to as idolatry.”You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.”-Exodus 20:4. You might be saying to yourself, “The pictures of Jesus?”, and that is the problem. IF YOU SPEND anytime on social media you have by now seen a plethora of images of a man with perfect long brown hair and beard wearing a white robe asking you to type “Amen” or “Share”.
